Need an old C-141A Starlifter to make that awesome playhouse for your kids? Or how about a C-8 Buffalo that’s been modified by adding four turbofans? Sadly, neither of those will ever be airworthy (legally), but you could have your pick of a handful of preowned Blackhawk helicopters (one per customer, please). Since they are still flyable, bidding for the Blackhawks starts at $1M apiece. But bidding on the Starlifter and the Buffalo starts at the low low low price of just $5,000. Bring a trailer.

You know, I’d love to have a NASA S tarlifter, but yeah, shipping is a killer on these deals.

A personal Blackhawk  would either be the most awesome or worst idea ever.

Yeah, I could see it going both ways, especially since I don’t know how to fly a helicopter.

When I was a kid (mid-80s) our favorite playground had a decommissioned and decontented Banshee that we played all over. The cockpit had been filled in with concrete.

A decade or so later, someone realized that the plane was a long-lost unicorn, a reconnaissance version of the jet. It’s now sitting in the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. I’ve been there a couple times and told my kids the story, but they still think I’m making it up.

Check out this link, it’s worth 30 seconds. The restoration was basically a full replacement of almost everything :

I feel like you could get a more comfortable and quieter helicopter for cheaper, but then again it wouldn’t be a Blackhawk. The Blackhawk is also probably harder to fly.

It’s a good thing we have strict regulations on what can fly. Otherwise there maybe a David Tracy figure with a pilots license that snaps up those two.

It’s truly fantastic, and it’s basically a straight shot on I-10 once you hit Houston (though I know you’re roadtripped-out at the moment).

I highly recommend the beaches along there, as well. Some of the best in the country. We go every summer and it’s usually pretty filled with Texans, so definitely plenty of people willing to make the drive :D

If you time it all right, you can sit on a pure white sandy spit of land just a few hundred yards from the Naval Air Station and watch the Blue Angels practice -- no airshow rules, they get really low.

That’s mental.  Also, stuff like that gives me hope.  If they can take a plane that had been forgotten on a playground and filled with concrete and make it into that, I can probably refurbish my truck.

I thought it would be cool to own a B-17. Then I found out it costs $10k/hour to operate. I imagine one of these, while admittedly cool, would cost even more to put in the air.

3 people bidding on it.

What a   Bed and breakfast that would make.

I did the 8 hour  flight from the Philippines to Diego Garcia on a C141. I froze my fucking ass off. Did those things not have heat?

It looks like the C-17 (the C-141's replacement) costs somewhere around $25,000/h to fly (though I don’t know exactly what that covers). The C-141 isn’t as powerful, but it’s easy to imagine that those old engines would be both thirstier, and more maintenance intensive.

That, I don’t know. I would bet that the flight crew was toasty

I guess  they didn’t spend a lot of time worrying about the comfort of the cargo when they designed it. At least for that flight they loaded regular seats so we didn’t have to ride the jump seats. Sadly the flight was originally supposed to be on a C5 but we kept having to turn around and come back due to mechanical issues. The passenger compartment on that thing was much more comfortable.

Yes, for my son. I certainly wouldn’t use the C-141 as a garage, and then climb into the cockpit and play jet engine noises on my phone every time I completed even the most minor repair. Nope, it would only be for my son.
